Hamas slams United States for blocking UN call for Gaza probe

Hamas and other groups organising the six-week protest campaign, dubbed the Great March of Return, say they are peacefully calling for the right of Palestinian refugees to return to land they fled from or were forced to leave in 1948, when Israel was created. Israeli troops opened fire from across the border, killing at least nine Palestinians and wounding 491 others in the second mass border protest in eight days.

Drawing some global criticism for its use of live fire, Israel said it is doing what is necessary to stop violent protesters from damaging or breaching its fence with the coastal enclave.

Ofir Gendelman, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, posted on his Twitter account last week that the protesters burned tires to provide cover for Hamas terrorists in Gaza, who he said "will try to storm the border, infiltrate Israel and kill Israelis". The Israeli military estimated Friday's turnout at 20,000. They say they hope the tires will shield them from Israeli snipers.

Friday's protests marked one week since the beginning of the "Great March of Return", a weeks-long protests in which nearly 1.3 million of Gaza's 2 million inhabitants who are refugees are demanding their right to return to their original homelands.

Demonstrations are set to end on May 15th, when Palestinians commemorate the anniversary of the creation of Israel (known by Palestinians as the "Nakba" or "catastrophe").

Israel still accuses Hamas, the political party and militant group in control of Gaza, of using the protests to infiltrate Israel to commit terror attacks.

German court refuses to extradite Catalonia's Puigdemont
Puigdemont's German lawyer said the separatist politician was arranging the transfer of the bail money to Germany. Sanchez said in a letter from a Madrid jail published Thursday that he was ready to try again to be elected.

Yasser Murtaja died from a gunshot wound he sustained while filming Friday in an area engulfed in thick black smoke from protesters setting tires on fire.

A new round of protests along the border is expected on Friday, raising the prospect of further bloodshed. He said the demonstrations would continue, telling the crowds: "We will uproot the borders, we will pluck out their hearts, and we will pray in Jerusalem".

Israel has pledged to stop attempts to damage the heavily fortified fence on the Gaza border and to prevent illegal infiltrations, including with live fire if necessary. Since then, Israel and Hamas have fought three wars, whereas makes an attempt at inside Palestinian reconciliation have repeatedly failed, largely due to Hamas' continued refusal to disarm. Gaza's 2 million residents obtain just a few hours of electrical energy every day, faucet water is undrinkable and the shoreline has been polluted by tons of untreated sewage.

Hamas has released photos that purport to show Israeli soldiers on the border within sniper range, sending the message that if it wanted to kill Israeli soldiers, it could.

"We came here because we want dignity", he said resting on a stretcher before paramedics transported him to the strip's main hospital.
