Several dead and around 30 injured as car ploughs into crowd in Germany

A van attack in the western German city of Muenster has left several people dead and at least a dozen injured on Saturday.

The senior security official said that police were conducting response measures as though it were a terrorist attack, but that they remained uncertain about whether it was one.

A police officer stands near the scene where a auto crashed into a group of people in Muenster, Germany, killing several.

The van injured 20 people, six seriously, after it ran into a group of outdoor tables at a restaurant, North Rhine-Westphalia police spokesman Andreas Bode told reporters.

The driver of the vehicle died after shooting himself, police said. They say they're still examining what kind of an object it is and whether it's unsafe.

A police spokeswoman in the western city, Vanessa Arlt, told AFP that the driver of the vehicle "shot himself".

There are no indicators the incident is terror-related, though investigators are still working to confirm that's the case, said Herbert Reul, the interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia state. It is not in a pedestrian zone, but the area has wide sidewalks where people had been sitting outside on a sunny, spring afternoon, police said. The city is also known as the "cycling capital of Germany", a nickname residents provided themselves, and is home to several universities.

I don't think we will go into it (against City) with any complacency, we would be stupid if we did that". He added: "We enjoy this tonight and then we start again tomorrow.

It showed pictures of where police had cordoned off an area of the city. Kiepenkerl is a popular bar in the city's historic downtown area.

Muenster Mayor Markus Lewe said the reason for the crash was still unclear.

The incident invoked comparisons to a 2016 incident when a vehicle barreled into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, which killed 12 people and injured 48 others.

She described the incident Saturday "terrible news".

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said his thoughts are with the victims and relatives of the crash in Muenster.

In this hair-raising ramming attack, a 19-ton cargo truck drove into a crowd of people who were celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France.
