Prosecutors had been asking for a 30-year prison sentence and a fine of about $120 million to be imposed on the former president.

"Ms. Park's conviction on bribery, coercion, abuse of power and other charges was the first lower-court ruling on a criminal case to be broadcast live in South Korea".

The court ruled that she had colluded with her close friend, Choi Soon-sil, to pressure conglomerates such as electronics giant Samsung and retail chain Lotte to give millions of dollars to foundations run by Choi.

She has consistently denied wrongdoing.

South Korean state news agency Yonhap reported that Park did not appear in the sentencing trial.

Consequently, her ouster from office previous year led to a presidential election won by the liberal Moon Jae-in, whose conciliatory stand on North Korea has underpinned a significant warming of ties between the antagonistic neighbours.

The DPK also condemned Park for boycotting the trial since October 2017. Lee was convicted of bribing Park in a bid to tighten his grip over the company.

The main opposition Liberty Korea Party (LKP) deplored the verdict.

Moon's office said Park's fate was "heartbreaking" not only for herself but for the country, and added that history that was not remembered history would be repeated. That feeling has only grown with the arrest of Park's predecessor on unrelated corruption charges.

First hurricane forecast for 2018 season released
The onslaught of storms left deep wounds across the Caribbean and southern United States that have not yet healed. This is the first outlook for the 2018 season which will be updated again on May 31, July 2, and August 2.

Park has a small group of fierce supporters - majority middle aged and older - who regularly stage rallies calling for her release and after the verdict was broadcast, thousands of them marched near the Seoul court to protest the ruling. Millions marched calling for her ouster. They waved South Korean and US flags and held signs that read, among other things, "Stop murderous political revenge!"

The corruption scandal triggered months of mass protests and political turmoil in South Korea.

Park Geun Hye's lawyer has stated that he will be speaking to Park Geun Hye about filing an appeal, and will announce the decision later on.

South Korean ousted leader Park Geun-hye arrives at a court in Seoul, South Korea, August 25, 2017.

She has been sentenced to 24 years in prison - effectively a life sentence for the 66-year-old. He was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison.

"There are so many people related to the corruption scandal".

"When her crimes came into light one by one, it threw the country into confusion". She was formally removed from office by the Constitutional Court on March 10 the following year.

She was arrested shortly afterwards, and has been in detention ever since.

Park, the daughter of assassinated dictator Park Chung-hee, faced a total of 18 charges but was absent in court, however, her flag-waving supporters gathered outside.
