Lawyer Who Lied to Mueller About Russian Spy Gets 30 Days

Alex van der Zwaan, a lawyer who once worked closely with Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, was also sentenced to two months of supervised release.

The first sentence has been handed down in the Mueller probe.

In February, Mueller announced that van der Zwaan, the son-in-law of a Ukrainian-Russian oligarch, had lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Van der Zwaan is a London-based lawyer who formerly worked at worldwide law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.

But in their new filing, prosecutors revealed that Rosenstein - who appointed Mueller - specifically authorized the investigation of any crimes related to payments Manafort received from the Ukrainian government during the tenure of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

On Tuesday, Jackson said she recognized that van der Zwaan has been away from his family for months, during which his wife is going through a hard pregnancy.

"Van der Zwaan was charged by Mueller's team with making false statements to investigators in an interview about his time working for a law firm hired by the Ukraine Ministry of Justice in 2012, when he helped produce a report on the trail of Ukrainian politician Yulia Tymoshenko", writes Fox.

She also declined to offer sympathy to van der Zwann after his lawyers said he has been bored in a D.C. -area hotel for months with nothing to do but converse with attorneys.

Spotify to test how its music service plays on Wall Street
It faces tough competition from the second-largest streaming company Apple Music, which has 38 million subscribers. That could make it even more hard for investors to settle on the right price for Spotify's stock, they say.

Van der Zwaan, the 33-year-old son-in-law of a Russian oligarch, pleaded guilty in February to lying to investigators about his work in Ukraine with former Trump campaign officials Paul Manafort and Rick Gates.

"What I did was wrong".

Prosecutors said when van der Zwaan was interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in November, he told investigators Gates had informed him that Person A was a former officer of the Russian military intelligence service known as the GRU.

The sentencing came just hours after another development in the special counsel's investigation of Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman.

Van der Zwaan's story is convoluted, and involves a Ukrainian internal political dispute from a decade ago.

Van der Zwaan's father-in-law German Khan is a co-founder of Alfa Bank, which fell under FBI investigation for attempting repeatedly to link up to a computer server in Trump Tower during the presidential campaign.

Prosecutors have alleged that Manafort and Gates used an offshore account to secretly pay $4 million for the report.

Van der Zwaan was the fourth guilty plea in the Mueller investigation after Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos and former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to investigators past year and agreed to cooperate, and an online supplier of fake usernames pleaded guilty to identity fraud in February.
