Egypt's Sisi re-elected with 97 percent of votes

Moussa won 656,534 votes, or 2.92 percent of total votes.

Egyptian incumbent President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi made a landslide victory in the country's presidential election, winning 97.08 percent of the valid votes, official results showed on Monday.

Turnout was 41 percent, despite efforts to get as many Egyptians as possible to polling stations during last week's vote.

He won less than 3% of the vote, while over 7% of all those cast were spoilt or deemed "invalid".

Sisi's serious contenders had withdrawn, been sidelined or detained.

The law approval came hours before official announcement of Sisi's victory in Egypt's 2018 presidential election. Turnout in the 2014 vote was 47 percent.

A coalition of eight Egyptian opposition parties and some 150 pro-democracy public figures had called for a boycott of the vote, calling it an "absurdity" befitting "old and crude dictatorships".

But his only opponent Mousa Mostafa Mousa won't be too unhappy - having publicly backed Sisi to win a second term.

Those enrolled in DACA had pinned their hopes on Democrats, who had continuously promised to win permanent legal status for them. Proposed DACA deals crafted by lawmakers and rejected by Trump also were not open to new participants.

El-Sisi hinted that working on more collaborative grounds would be a priority in his upcoming term.

"I just want to let everybody know, in case there was any doubt, that we are very much behind President al-Sissi", Trump said during last April's meeting, adding: "We are very much behind Egypt and the people of Egypt".

The NEA previously decided that eligible Egyptian citizens who abstained from voting in the presidential election would be fined 500 Egyptian pounds (about $28).

There were no presidential debates and Sisi himself did not appear at any official campaign events, although he spoke at a number of ceremonies.

Egypt has been suffering from a wave of terror attacks that have killed hundreds of policemen, soldiers and civilians since the army toppled former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

In the wake of his election success, the Egyptian armed forces congratulated Sisi in a statement, "affirming that it will always stand behind its wise leadership".

Also in recent months, el-Sissi's popularity has suffered as a result of harsh economic reforms that have taken their toll on most Egyptians.
