Russia Tests New 'Modern' Ballistic Missile

The RS-28 Sarmat is said to be capable of carrying up to 10 or 15 nuclear warheads and flying at supersonic speed.

The launch of the Sarmat missile system at a spaceport in western Russian Federation on Friday comes as tensions between the nation and the West reach levels not seen since the Cold War.

The new heavy intercontinental ballistic missile underwent an ejection test at the Plesetsk state test cosmodrome. It will replace the Soviet-built Voevoda intercontinental ballistic missile, which is approaching the end of its service life, the Sputnik news agency reported.

Tensions between Russia and the US have been heightened after Trump expelled about 60 Russian diplomats from the U.S.in response to the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy and his daughter in Britain.

Russia had tested a hypersonic nuclear missile earlier in March, after Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed to the world Russia's new arsenal of weapons, including the missiles it claims are "invincible" and that can attack anywhere in the world, including the United States.

Experts have said Putin's claims about the missile were hyperbolic, given that Russia's current Voyevoda-class ICBMs can already easily overwhelm the U.S.' missile defenses, as they could have in the Cold War. The U.S. and other countries have expelled some Russian diplomats.

Putin has since said he does not want an arms race. Trump argued that "Getting along with Russian Federation (and others) is a good thing, not a bad thing" because "they can help solve problems with North Korea, Syria, Ukraine, ISIS, Iran and even the coming Arms Race".

Relations between Washington and Moscow, long at odds over their global foreign policy visions, fell out significantly after Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula amid neighboring Ukraine's 2014 political uprising that the Kremlin argued would threaten the ethnic Russian population there.
