Nobel Winner Malala Returns to Pakistan for First Time Since Being Shot

Mingora is where Malala's family was living and where she was attending school on October 9, 2012, when a gunman boarded her school bus, asked "Who is Malala?", and shot her. That was the year she was attacked by the Taliban for advocating girls' education.

While in the region, Ms Yousafzai visited her childhood home with her mother, father and two brothers.

Yousafzai and her family arrived in the town of Mingora, in the Swat Valley, via helicopter from Islamabad provided by the Pakistani military after arriving in the Pakistani capital on Thursday flanked by heavy security.

The 20-year-old told a family friend she planned to return home after completing her education at Oxford, where she is reading for a degree in politics, philosophy and economics.

In 2014, Malala became the youngest Nobel laureate, honored for her work with the Malala Foundation, a charity she set up to support education advocacy groups with a focus on Pakistan, Nigeria, Jordan, Syria and Kenya.

Malala Yousafzai landed in the Swat valley Saturday for her first visit back to the once militant-infested Pakistani region where she was shot in the head by the Taliban more than five years ago.

The 20-year-old global figure visited her home in the valley and broke down in tears before she proceeded to visit Cadet College and Fizagat Park.

Malala was accompanied by State Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb among others as she travelled from Islamabad to Swat via helicopter.

Schoolgirls in Yousafzai's hometown were already jubilant over her arrival. But she told me that I had won the Peace Prize.

She had been targeted for speaking out on education in her home of Mingora in the Swat Valley.

"I still remember each and every moment, right from the fear while sleeping at night that you might not be alive the next day", Yousafzai said.

On Friday, Yousafzai praised the Pakistan army in an interview on the independent Geo news channel for providing her timely medical treatment, saying her surgery was done by an army surgeon at the "right time".

Later on March 31 she visited an all-boys cadet college located around 15 kilometers outside of Mingora.

"We're very happy that Malala has come to Pakistan".

Swat emerged as a success-story of Pakistan's fight against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants.

Malala reiterated her joy of being in Pakistan and her mission of providing education to children.

Her father was a teacher in a school that educated girls and managed to stay open until early 2009.

However she has also been met with pockets of intense criticism.

"What I want is people support my goal of education and think about the daughters of Pakistan who need an education".
