Nvidia pauses its self-driving vehicle tests in wake of Uber crash

Nvidia looks to the AI future

The second server contains the NVIDIA DRIVE Pegasus AI auto computer that runs the entire software stack in an autonomous driving vehicle.

The simulation platform follows Nvidia's statement that it was temporarily halting its self-driving auto tests following the fatal Uber crash last week.

Drive Constellation allows automakers and other developers to validate and strengthen the technology through billions of driving miles that allow for testing in hard scenarios.

Nvidia announced in January that Uber had selected Nvidia technology to power its self-driving vehicle AI, though Nvidia computing tech was already present in Uber's first fleet of Volvo XC90 SUVs.

The simulation server is powered by NVIDIA GPUs, each generating a stream of simulated sensor data, which feed into the DRIVE Pegasus for processing. "Anybody who thought that they could get by without supercomputers, and simulators, and just vast amounts of data collection, and all those engineers dedicated to making sure that this product is as safe as possible, you and I got to believe that sensibility has completely changed".

LiAngelo Ball Drops 72 Points Hours After Declaring For NBA Draft
LiAngelo Ball was embroiled in a shoplifting scandal in China past year while on a trip with the Bruins. After he graduated high school, he joined the UCLA Bruins on a scholarship.

"With DRIVE Constellation, we've accomplished that by combining our expertise in visual computing and data centers". This "hardware-in-the-loop" cycle, which occurs 30 times a second, is used to validate that algorithms and software running on Pegasus are operating the simulated vehicle correctly. Huang said. "It takes a billion miles to experience 770 accidents".

"Autonomous vehicles need to be developed with a system that covers training to testing to driving", said Luca De Ambroggi, research and analyst director at IHS Markit. This way companies can test how their cars react to risky situations without endangered people or the product.

Drive Constellation will begin rolling out to early access partners in the third quarter.

The testing may be taking place in a virtual environment, but it's happening on the same hardware and software that would be found in a self-driving auto, Nvidia's Danny Shapiro explained in a briefing.

Nvidia had been testing driverless vehicle technology around the world in locations such as Santa Clara, Calif., where the company is headquartered, as well as in New Jersey, Japan and Germany.
