President Trump on Tuesday promised the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, to help push through long-stalled arms deals for the desert kingdom, saying the transactions would bring billions of dollars in investment and new jobs to the United States.

"We make the best equipment in the world, there's nobody even close, and Saudi Arabia's buying a lot of this equipment", Trump said, using a poster headlined "KSA Sales Pending" to highlight tanks, missile defense systems, and planes the USA has agreed to sell to Saudi Arabia over the past year.

In a December telephone call, Trump asked King Salman to contribute $4 billion to reconstruction and stabilization efforts in parts of Syria cleared of the Islamic State and thought he had gotten a Saudi commitment, The Washington Post reported last week.

He is on a public relations blitz while travelling in the United States, with stops in New York, Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston.

He told a crowd in the northeastern city of Mashad in a Persian New Year message that the United States would not achieve its goals in the region.

Images of the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen prompted Trump previous year to issue a rare rebuke of Saudi policy, urging the kingdom to lift a blockade on the civil war-wracked country "immediately".

"The relationship is probably the strongest it's ever been - we understand each other".

A Saudi-led coalition is fighting to counter the influence of Iran, an ally of the Houthi militia in Yemen, in a conflict with catastrophic consequences for civilians.

Trump and MBS - as he is known in Washington's corridors of power - have seen eye-to-eye on concerns about Iran's military activism, Middle East peace, relaxing Saudi Arabia's deeply conservative laws and over their love for big ticket mega-investments.

The crown prince, in a rare foray into speaking English, said on Tuesday the Saudi pledge for $200 billion in investments would end up at $400 billion when fully implemented.

But as they talked, United States senators debated a resolution seeking an end to USA support for Saudi Arabia's campaign in Yemen's civil war.

Having met with President Donald Trump 24 hours earlier to discuss Saudi-US ties, the kingdom's crown prince was expected to hold talks with major editorial boards, congressional leaders from both parties and attend a dinner at the Vice President Mike Pence's residence.

Trump sounded an ominous note as he looked ahead to a decision in May about whether to stay in the Iran nuclear deal, loathed by both Trump and the Saudis.

Trump said that the Saudis were "also footing a big part of the bill for defense" in "the whole Middle East" but made clear that he expects Riyadh to do more.Referring to the almost completed battlefield defeat of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, Trump said that US involvement was "coming to an end in that part of the world". A lot of bad things are happening in Iran. Additional deals might still come to fruition.
