The latest in a long string of deadly shootings at US schools and colleges occurred little more than a month after 14 students and three faculty members were fatally shot on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The 16-year-old victim, who has been identified as Jaelyn Willey, is in ICU at Prince George's Shock Trauma in critical condition. There were no immediate official reports of casualties in the shooting at Great Mills High School, located about a 90-minute drive southeast of the USA capital Washington.

The congressman earlier renewed his call for more stringent background checks on would-be gun purchasers, and the governor spoke of current school-safety legislation in Annapolis, along with the need for "taking guns out of the hands of the mentally ill". Police say they are still investigating the motive for the shooting.

Gaskill's response was hailed as an example of exactly what a resource officer is supposed to do in such a circumstance, particularly when contrasted to the actions of the security officer in last month's shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Great Mills High School is in St. Mary's County, which is about 110 km south of Washington.

Within minutes of the school shooting at Great Mills High School, pastors started organizing a vigil at a nearby church. They said the gunman was fatally wounded, but it was not clear whether he was shot by the officer or hit by his own round.

Shortly before the opening bell, the call went out for "shots fired" at Great Mills High School in Maryland.

Blaine Gaskill, the school resource officer and a former SWAT team member, responded within a minute, firing one round. It wasn't clear whether he shot himself or was shot by the school resource officer who responded. But Cameron credited the officer with preventing any more loss of life.

A student who said his name was Jonathan Freese said in a telephone interview on CNN that he had been on lockdown with classmates for almost an hour, but he did not hear gunshots himself. Julie Yingling says there are injuries Tuesday at Great Mills High School but she didn't know how many or the severity of the injuries. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tries to answer such requests within 24 hours. "If you don't think this can happen at your school you are sadly mistaken". Scott Smith, superintendent of St. Mary's public schools, noted the painful aftermath that will follow the shooting. My school is on a very real lockdown threat and there's already someone possibly dead. It has more than 1,500 students, about 56% of them minority students, and its four-year graduation rate is 91%, according to the school's 2015-16 improvement plan.
