Toyota suspends autonomous testing after Uber accident – report

While there have been accidents before that involved Tesla Inc's (NASDAQ:TSLA) cars, this is the first time we've heard of a death caused by an autonomous vehicle.

Specific permits aren't required as long as the vehicle meets all applicable motor vehicle laws and there is a licensed driver either in the auto or monitoring it remotely.

"There will no doubt be an exhaustive investigation of the tragic incident involving an Uber self-driving vehicle and a pedestrian", Akshay Anand, an analyst at Kelley Blue Book, said in an emailed statement.

Hyundai previously said that it would launch autonomous production cars in 2021, but they would be limited to so-called "smart cities" with supporting infrastructure.

The American National Transportation Safety Board is sending investigators to probe the accident involving the Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle, which had been fitted with Uber's sensing system.

Toyota had been doing on-road testing with self-driving vehicles in MI and California, Lyons said.

While the investigation isn't yet complete, it appears that Herzber is at fault for the incident.

NPR reports that Uber has suspended all autonomous vehicle operations in Pittsburgh, Tempe, San Francisco and Toronto in response to the crash. Arizona's self-driving vehicle oversight committee has not planned any meetings or actions, he said. Daniel Scarpinato, a spokesman for Ducey, said the updated order from the governor "provides enhanced enforcement measures and clarity on responsibility in these accidents".
