Mueller has had similar negotiations over records, including some that involve subpoenas, with dozens of attorneys, companies and people involved in the investigation.

A Trump organization lawyer said the Times report was "old news", reiterating that the business has been fully cooperating.

You write, "The lawyers have advised Mr. Trump to refuse an interview, but the president has said he wants to do it, as he believes he has done nothing wrong and can easily answer investigators' questions".

U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents, including some related to Russian Federation, the New York Times reported on Thursday, citing two people briefed on the matter.

Mueller has headed a special investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign since May 2017, after Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey. The New York Times first reported the special counsel's latest move on Thursday as part of the team's ongoing investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian entities.

Details of the subpoena were not available, the newspaper said.

Temperatures on the face of it will probably be just around freezing, but with the wind, it's going to feel well below freezing. Widespread frost, low daytime temperatures and a significant wind chill are likely to develop.

Asked Thursday about the subpoena and the president's red line comments made to the Times a year ago, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders referred questions to the Trump Organization. The president declined to say how he would respond if he concluded that the special counsel had crossed that line.

The Times said special counsel witnesses had been asked recently about a potential real estate deal in Moscow, and that investigators have questioned witnesses about the flow of money from the United Arab Emirates to the United States.

Trump would not say whether he would fire Mueller if he did look into his finances.

The Times report said the subpoena is related to records prior to Trump's run for office.

Mueller is investigating Russian attempts to influence the 2016 USA election, and potential collusion by Trump aides.

It's hard to believe that Trump's business activities have been completely above board, and Mueller is empowered to pursue "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".
