India's two budget airlines cancel 65 flights over "faulty engines"

IndiGo Go Air cancel several flights following DGCA order

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation grounded 11 planes belonging to two low-priced carriers, after the engine of an IndiGo aircraft failed mid-air.

Of these, 8 are operated by IndiGo and 3 by GoAir.

Concerns over safety of such planes increased with another engine failure forcing emergency landing of IndiGo flight at Ahmedabad airport today, and the regulator cracking the whip saying that there is no concrete proposal in place at this stage to address the issue.

A successor of the A320 family, the Airbus A320 neo is passenger aircraft that comprises four narrow-bodied aircraft variants: A318neo, A319neo, A320neo and A321neo. "Both IndiGo and GoAir have been told not to refit these engines, which are spare with them in their inventory", the DGCA said in a release.

DGCA said it would remain in touch with the stakeholders including the European Aviation Safety Agency. Out of the 11, eight are operated by IndiGo while GoAir operates three.

Desmond, suffering from myopia and not seen anything from the back row, sat on one of the seats for whites and refused to leave. Canada's Finance Minister Bill Moreau and Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz assisted Robson with the unveiling.

Meanwhile, Vistara said the move by the aviation regulator has had no impact on its operations as its A320 Neos are fitted with a different engine.

With this, all the A320neo aircraft with PW1100 engines beyond serial number 450 have been taken off operation in India.

Clarifying its position, Pratt & Whitney in a statement said, "We are working closely with our customers to minimise disruption". It comes after three in-service shutdowns of aircraft with one PW1100 engine featuring the seal, two of which occurred in the past week, according to the DGCA. It and GoAir said they'd complied with the DGCA directive. The airlines have promised to accommodate the affected passengers in other aircraft but there will be a change in their schedule.

India took the drastic measure of grounding all Airbus SE narrow-body planes powered by the latest Pratt & Whitney engines, removing the aircraft from the country's skies after a series of in-flight incidents.

Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu is wasting no time in his new ministry.
