Pyongyang on Wednesday dispatched a total of 20 athletes and their guardians and four members of their NPC to the Paralympics, which begins on Friday.

Alpine skier Han Sang-min became the first South Korean to claim a Winter Paralympic medal in 2002, when he took silver in giant slalom LW12 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Luckily the Winter Paralympics is about the start, so you can get your fix of shouting at the telly for Team GB.

In 2008 Schultz suffered injuries in a snocross race that resulted in having his left leg amputated above the knee when the snowmobile he was riding landed on his leg.

A cheery mood coursed through festivities that lacked the tension of the 2014 Sochi Paralympics, when Ukraine sent only its flag-bearer to the opening ceremony to protest Russia's intervention in the Crimean Peninsula, or the undertones of the 2016 Rio Paralympics, which were stained by financial turmoil and meager ticket sales.

Russian Federation remains banned from the Paralympics following a decision in 2016 that barred the country from competing in the Rio Summer Paralympics because of a state-run doping system.

He is arguably Japan's best-known disabled athlete, but some may be surprised to see Atsushi Yamamoto at the Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics. The event featuring multiple winter sports will emphasize inspiration, determination, courage and equality.

The 2018 Games will mark the biggest winter Paralympics to date, with more than 560 athletes vying for over 80 medals.

Yamamoto also has new motivation: his wife Sachiko gave birth to their first child, Shunta, less than a week before the beginning of the games. The 38-year-old skier is back for Pyeongchang, his fourth Paralympics. The team won bronze at the 2017 world championships behind Canada and the United States. He won a World Cup biathlon event in Finland last month.

He was a last-minute addition for Pyeongchang because a dislocated right elbow kept him from joining qualifying events, leaving him to wait for a wild card invitation from the International Paralympic Committee. The organizing committee says up to 670 athletes from 49 countries will compete in six sports.

This year the impairments the competing athletes have include amputee, visual impairment, cerebral and spinal injuries.

An additional KRW240 million (USD$223,200) was spent on the visit of a high-level North Korean delegation, which included Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong, to the South on the occasion of the Olympic opening ceremony.

Three athletes have also competed in summer sports at the Paralympic Games: Brad Bowden, Cindy Ouellet and Liam Hickey (all in wheelchair basketball).
