In February, Pena Nieto abruptly canceled a visit to Washington, after reports circulated of a testy exchange and breakdown in communication during a phone call with Trump.

The White House has either fired or reassigned multiple employees over problems with their security clearances, according to ABC News.

Several White House staffers have been terminated or reassigned for issues related to their security clearances - with at least one individual employed in the Office of the First Lady relieved of duty, sources with direct knowledge tell ABC News.

On Monday, as the latest round of the negotiations over NAFTA were wrapping up, Trump repeated that the trade deal was bad for the U.S. and that Mexico was not doing enough to stop drugs flowing into the country.

They'll also meet with Mexico's foreign minister.

USA presidential adviser Jared Kushner is in Mexico, trying to fix damaged ties.

Kushner's status as a top adviser to the president and his access to sensitive intelligence raised questions previous year when it emerged that he had to amend his security clearance form several times, at one point to add more than 100 names to a list of his foreign contacts, since first applying.

According to The Washington Post, officials from both countries told the paper that Peña Nieto "called off the plan after Trump would not agree to publicly affirm Mexico's position that it would not fund construction of a border wall".

Trump has repeatedly blamed the pact for the loss of US manufacturing jobs and has threatened to ditch it unless it can be reworked to better suit USA interests.

Sputnik reported that White House sources said Trump, in the telephone exchange, had insisted that the Latin American country should pay for his campaign-promised wall to keep out undocumented immigrants.
