Manafort pleaded not guilty in a Virginia courtroom to additional charges ranging from bank fraud to filing false tax returns that were brought by Robert Mueller, the USA special counsel for the Russian Federation probe.

In one instance, Manafort allegedly dealt with an unpaid $300,000 American Express bill by telling a bank that Gates had borrowed his credit card and run up the charges, the indictment says.

So far, more than 100 charges have been filed against a 19 people and three companies. Guidelines call for about eight to 10 years, though.

He appeared in the federal court in Washington on February 28 to plead not guilty to 17 grand jury charges of conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, lying to federal agents and failing to register as a foreign agent.

Manafort is charged in Washington with making false statements about his foreign lobbying work, which he primarily did for Ukrainian politicians, and engaging in a money laundering conspiracy.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis scheduled the trial to begin on July 10.

U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller brought them as part of a wide-ranging probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, possible obstruction of justice, and alleged financial crimes by Manafort and others.

Prosecutors had offered to combine the indictments in the District, but Manafort refused to do so.

Newly released court documents show that a federal judge reprimanded Paul Manafort for breaking a gag order she had imposed on his case.

Manafort is innocent of the Virginia charges, his spokesperson Jason Maloni said in a statement after the indictment was announced.

In return, Mueller agreed to drop 22 tax and bank fraud charges against him. It's the second case tied to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation in which Manafort has pleaded not guilty.

"Less is better still", Judge Jackson said with a smile after Manafort's arraignment.

The judge imposed similar bail conditions on Manafort to those already in place in the District, including home confinement.

Ellis, a senior judge, was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987.
