Jonny Bairstow (138) and Joe Root (101) earlier added 190 for the second wicket to set the base for a huge English total.

It means the Kiwis have levelled the series at 2-2 with one match to play in Christchurch on Saturday.

Taylor says he should be fine to take his place in the XI.

Taylor's injury came when he was on 109 and had to dive to avoid a run-out, inflaming the thigh strain that forced him out of the previous match in the series.

Ross Taylor struck his career best ODI score with an unbeaten 181.

Later innings of 29 from 23 balls by Jos Buttler and 23 from 19 balls from man-of-the-match Ali helped England to a total which proved to be just sufficient.

From that moment on the former New Zealand captain, who this week talked about how an eye operation past year has given him a new lease of life at 33, could barely run between the wickets but it did not stop him.

At the time, Trump also warned of a " phase two " that could be " very, very unfortunate for the world " if the steps did not work.

The star right-hander made a match-winning 181 not out off 147 balls - featuring 17 fours and six sixes - and was ably supported by Tom Latham (71) in a 187-run partnership for the fourth wicket in the fourth ODI at University Oval. His first four balls were smashed for 15 runs to leave the Black Caps needing a run a ball from the final six overs. De Grandhomme picked out Woakes at backward point and Curran and Woakes used all their variations to keep England in the game.

Bairstow has struggled to establish himself in England's one-day squad - in 41 matches since making his debut in 2011, he has batted in every position from one to six - but he has been preferred at the top of the order over the past six months, batting 11 times at two since September 2017.

But Santner was culpable when he put down an easier chance at extra-cover off Trent Boult to reprieve Bairstow on 74.

It came off 106 balls and included 14 fours and seven sixes.

This was the highest of his 19 one-day global centuries and his second in this series to follow the one at Hamilton that gave New Zealand victory in the opening game. Not after leaking a whopping 87 runs and notching a sole wicket from his 10 overs, the last of which No 10 Curran slapped for 18 runs.

He also became the 2nd highest run getter (7,267) for New Zealand in ODIs.

Auckland batsman Mark Chapman, who was an injury replacement for Williamson and then Taylor, scored one in the second game and then threw his wicket away for eight in Wellington. "It was an outstanding partnership with him and Tom Latham".
