Texans Reportedly Won't Pursue Any Players in Free Agency Who Kneeled During National Anthem

The Houston Texans have denied a report that stated the team has no interest in signing players who have protested during the national anthem or are likely to do so in the future.

Columnist Jerome Solomon, who authored The Chronicle's story, also wrote that Texans owner Bob McNair has been "racially tone deaf often enough" that it has fostered a belief that race plays a role in how the organization operates. However, that was nothing compared to the reaction it received once it became public.

McNair insisted he wasn't referring to the players with his comments. After the report surfaced regarding his words, Texans star DeAndre Hopkins skipped practice and other players contemplated a walk out.

Well, as long as those players haven't protested during the national anthem in the past, that is. After a sack of Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett, who spent the season sitting on the bench during the anthem, celebrated by taking a knee at midfield.

President Trump thrust the issue of protesting players into the national headlines past year, urging a national boycott of the "disgraceful" league until NFL officials and owners cracked down on athletes who disrespect the flag. Should the Texans be intent on taking those protests into account, they may have a very tough time singling out acceptable targets in free agency.

Trump triggered an outcry after sharply criticizing players who kneel during "The Star-Spangled Banner" to draw attention to social issues.
