The White House official said the proposed 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports would result in a mere Dollars 25,000 increase in the price of a USD 330 million Boeing 77.

Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau, speaking north of Toronto, said Ottawa is now negotiating NAFTA with a partner that has "changed the terms of the discussion", referring to the US.

In a series of tweets, Trump linked the tariffs - which sparked a fierce global response last week following their surprise announcement - to issues with NAFTA partners Canada and Mexico.

Roberto Azevedo, the director-general of the Geneva-based WTO, said the agency was clearly concerned at the United States plans and warned that "a trade war is in no-one's interests".

The EU is drawing up retaliatory measures against leading US brands, such as Levi's and Harley-Davidson, after US President Donald Trump threatened a trade war with plans for tariffs on steel and aluminum, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Friday.

An estimated $274 million of Australian steel and $276 million of Australian aluminium could be caught up in the saga. Originally that implied a country imposing safeguards would lower tariffs on other goods to balance the economic impact.

"It's not only China that believes this to be unreasonable, many European countries and Canada have all said they can not accept this".

A number of Republicans, including congressional leaders, urged Trump to hold back on the tariffs.

Canada, the biggest supplier of steel and aluminum to the US, and Mexico, the No. 4 source of steel, have asked to be excluded from the tariffs.

It now looks impossible for negotiators to meet their goal of getting an agreement by the end of this month, especially amid the prospect of escalating trade tensions from the steel dispute.

Trump's tariffs cover a broad range of steel and aluminium products, suggesting they are not being applied conservatively.

British Prime Minister Theresa May raised her "deep concern" about the tariffs in a phone call with Trump on Sunday, her office said.

China doesn't want a trade war, the politician said - but it will respond in kind if Trump's tariffs harm it economically.

The U.S. and Canadian steel and aluminum industries are heavily integrated, with major U.S. players owning portions of both, including Alcoa and Stelco.

Amid these events, Trump announced Thursday that he would impose new tariffs - taxes on imports - of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum. The cost of new appliances, cars and buildings will rise if the president follows through, they warn, and other nations could retaliate.

"I think that we should look at all options.in the national interest", Bowen told ABC radio.

"There is always retaliation, and typically a lot of these countries single out agriculture when they do that".
