Donald Trump Claims He Would've Gone Into The School To Stop The Parkland Shooter

The Florida Senate spent hours debating a bill to increase school safety and restrict gun purchases in a rare Saturday session, March 3, that often turned into a debate on gun control and arming teachers in the aftermath of last month's Parkland school shootings.

Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican, has pushed a bill to enhance criminal background checks, a bill requiring the Federal Bureau of Investigation to tell states when someone fails a background check, a program for intervening when children are potential threats, and some form of temporary gun-violence restraining order. Sen. Republican Sen. Dana Young of Tampa missed the vote.

All of the votes in the Florida senate that rejected the bill banning AR-15s were from Republicans. Democratic lawmakers attempted to put the gun restriction into a bill, SB 7026, that would invest money in mental health and school safety programs.

Any bill that comes from the legislature would ultimately have to be approved by Governor Rick Scott, who has said that he opposes the "school marshal" portion of the bill.

Justin Berton, a spokesman for Schaaf, said the mayor's office is unaware of any review and declined to comment further. Immigration detainers lodged against them have been "repeatedly ignored", Schwab said.

Many student survivors of the Valentine's Day shooting that left 17 people dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School flocked to the State House in the days after the attack to lobby legislators to ban assault weapons and take other measures on gun control. It would still be up to the school districts to decide whether to participate and sponsor teachers to undergo training.

In response to reports that law enforcement and school officials had numerous warning signs to flag troubling behavior by gunman Nikolas Cruz, Galvano said the legislation "empowers law enforcement" to seize and hold firearms for up to 24 hours for anyone who is being held under the Baker Act and longer if they obtain a risk protection order from the court. "The reason it is not being included is not because of constitutional law". They are calling for a ban on the sale of semi-automatic assault weapons.

The bill to ban assault weapons, including the AR-15 used in the school shooting, failed by a 20-to-17 vote.

For 15 minutes, the Florida Senate was in favor of a two-year moratorium on sales of assault weapons. "And I, for one, wont be going home trying to pretend that I did something trying to solve the problem".
