Four-minute mile record breaker Sir Roger Bannister dies at 88

What is the record for running a mile, after death of Sir Roger Bannister?

By then Bannister was having trouble walking, let alone running, after revealing he was suffering from Parkinson's disease.

"Sir Roger Bannister was more than simply one of the greatest athletes of all time — by breaking the 4-minute mile he redefined what was thought impossible, and inspired the world".

Lord Coe, who followed in Bannister's footsteps by breaking the mile world record three times, paid tribute to an inspirational man, describing him as a "giant".

Bannister considered that victory even more satisfying than the first 4-minute mile because it came in a competitive race against his greatest rival. He clocked in at 3 minutes 59.4 seconds, a record at the time. He had smashed the world record of 4 minutes, 1.4 seconds, set nearly nine years earlier by Gunder Haegg of Sweden.

Australian John Landy surpassed Bannister's record just a month later with a time of 3:57.9.

Six weeks later, on August 7, 1954, Bannister and Landy faced off at the British Empire Games in Vancouver.

Later in 1954, Bannister retired from athletics to focus on his study of medicine at the University of Oxford, eventually becoming a neurologist.

Later in 1954, Bannister won the 1,500 meters at the European Championships in Bern, Switzerland, in a games record of 3:43.8. Sports Illustrated named him its first "Sportsman of the Year". Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj set the current record, 3:43:13, in 1999 in Rome. "Sir Roger Bannister showed that barriers are there to be broken and there are no limits". "Since I did it, it has gone down a third of a second a year, on average".

Bannister was born in 1929 in Harrow, England. No woman has ever run the mile in less than four minutes.

He might not have set the milestone but for the disappointment of finishing without a medal in the 1,500 meters, known as the metric mile, in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. He was in his final year as a clinical student when he broke that barrier.

He wrote or edited medical texts such as "Brain and Bannister's Clinical Neurology" in 1992.

Bannister married Moyra Jacobsson, an artist, in 1955.

He remained interested in sports and, in 1971, became the first head of the U.K.'s Sports Council, which started testing athletes for steroids. Bannister was knighted in 1975, and served as the Master of Pembroke College at Oxford University from 1985 until 1993.

"Around the last bend, I think the crowd was making so much noise he couldn't hear whether I was behind, or whether he'd dropped me, and he looked over his left shoulder, and I passed him on his right shoulder", Bannister said. "I'd like to see it as a metaphor not only for sport, but for life and seeking challenges".
