Facebook Ends 'Explore Feed' Test that Showed Two Separate News Feeds

Facebook said it won't separate the News Feed after all

Facebook on March 1 put an end to a test of splitting its signature News Feed into two, an idea that roiled how people consumed news in the six countries where it occurred and added to concern about Facebook's power. When news about the split news feed first surfaced, it sparked concerns about the growing power of the social media giant, and how publishers would be affected.

A trial redesign of user's news feeds in Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Bolivia, Cambodia, Serbia and Slovakia has been halted after strong criticism.

"People don't want two separate feeds", wrote Adam Mosseri, the exec in charge of Facebook's News Feed, in a blog post Thursday.

In what is nearly definitely a response to the slew of criticism thrown at social media companies for allowing so-called fake news ahead of United States and other elections to spread, Zuckerberg said he meant to focus on "important issues".

He said there was a preference for the most recent News Feed update, which prioritises posts from friends and family over posts from the media and other brands and has been called "deeply significant" for the industry.

Billy Graham honored at funeral: 'He's in the presence of God'
Graham's life will also be memorialized by his pastor, Don Wilton, before being buried next to his wife Ruth on library grounds. My hope is that there are enough leaders here across the board that President Trump won't suck the oxygen out of the room.

"Many people told me they thought that if we could turn down the temperature on the more divisive issues and instead focus on concrete local issues, then we'd all make more progress together", he said.

As well, reports had surfaced that the divide between user and publisher-created posts had inadvertently been causing some significant fake news problems.

With the experiment concluding, the company has just learned that two separate feeds won't help. The testing began in October 2017 and was run in six countries. "We're acting on this feedback by updating the way we evaluate where to test new products, and how we communicate about them".

However, users trialling the new capability were clear that they "don't want" two separate feeds. Explore gave people a new feed of content to discover Pages and public figures they hadn't previously followed.

Mosseri noted (and as most publishers are painfully aware), Facebook made significant changes to its algorithm earlier this year that have already been used to privilege posts from friends and family.
