It went quiet for users in many locations Friday because of an outage within Amazon's cloud data service, AWS. When you finally do get something out of Alexa, it will be the fact that it's lost connection.

Alexa can already translate basic terms and phrases in German, French, Italian, and Spanish but Amazon wants to improve on the system.

TechCrunch points out that some Alexa services are still available through the Alexa app, so if you desperately need to interact with your smart home through Alexa, you can do so on your phone. Just like Microsoft translator and Google Translate, Alexa could place many language translators out of business.

The sources also expect that one day Alexa will be so advanced that a single device could translate multiple people speaking multiple different languages at the same time. "Alexa, what do I say to the father of the bride at a wedding in Japan?" Google Pixel Buds has a similar feature and obviously work with a Google Assistant.

If you're traveling and unsure of how to ask for a table at a restaurant, Amazon wants Alexa to have your back. According to a new report, the company wants to turn Alexa into a real-time universal language translator.

"For instance, if a person from the US, who only speaks English, attends a wedding in Tokyo and doesn't speak Japanese, Alexa would be able to help that person hold a conversation in Japanese".

In other words, in the above example, Alexa would consider the Japanese's culture, which is more formal and conservative than American culture.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
