Trump Says Chief of Staff Will Decide on Kushner's Security Clearance

White House: Security Clearance Crackdown Won't Affect Kushner's Job

Mr. Trump, at a joint news conference with visiting Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, said "General Kelly respects Jared a lot and General Kelly will make that call" on how to resolve the issue.

With Kelly seated nearby, Trump said: "I have no doubt he will make the right decision".

It's a week of reckoning for White House senior adviser Jared Kushner and dozens of other officials who have been working without permanent security clearances for the better part of a year.

Earlier in February, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein called White House counsel Don McGahn to inform him that there were ongoing issues with Kushner's security clearance.

Kelly also wrote that he would be curtailing "access to certain highly classified information for those individuals working with interim clearance status" unless he will grant 'only in the most compelling circumstances'.

Kelly, a retired Marine general, has also made it known that Trump's personal intervention would pose a problem and possibly undercut his authority in the West Wing.

The policy change came amid an uproar over ousted White House staff secretary Rob Porter, who allegedly was allowed to handle classified information despite an Federal Bureau of Investigation background check that found credible accusations of domestic abuse.

Sanders declined to say whether President Trump would overturn any determination from Kelly that would deny Kushner, or anyone else, a permanent authorization.

"He works for nothing".

Multiple White House officials have said the complications with Kushner's security clearance have only exacerbated his frustration with Kelly, who has privately disregarded Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, as unserious and meddling.

Prosecutors said Flynn was acting in consultation with a senior Trump transition official, whom people familiar with the matter have identified as Kushner.

Earlier this week, the White House maintained that Kushner's work will be unaffected by the change. Two people said the deputy attorney general told McGahn the Justice Department had obtained important new information, suggesting it could be an obstacle to his clearance process. "He is working on peace in the Middle East". "And Gen. Kelly will make that call", Trump said. "She said, 'Dad, i want to go to Washington".

In a memo distributed to White House staff last Friday, Chief of Staff John Kelly announced that all White House employees with background investigations pending since June 1 will have their temporary clearances revoked as of today, the New York Times reported.

"So the more direct question is will Trump throw his son-in-law under the bus, and then the corollary to that is will his son-in-law throw his father-in-law under the bus?"

"I have definitely had cases over the years where there was a parallel criminal investigation ... that was happening at the same time as there was a clearance investigation", Zaid said.
