NHL: Penguins acquire Brassard in three-team trade

The deal also sent Ottawa Senators center Derick Brassard to the Penguins as well as Pittsburgh defenseman Ian Cole, goalie prospect Filip Gustavsson and draft picks to the Senators.

The Pittsburgh Penguins appear to be loading up for a shot at a third consecutive Stanley Cup. This very well could go down as the most complex trade in National Hockey League history, but the big takeaway from a fantasy perspective is that Brassard is now a member of a Penguins club in pursuit of its third consecutive Stanley Cup championship.

This season with Ottawa, Brassard has 18 goals and 38 points in 58 games.

To complete the trade, the Pens will receive a 2018 third-round draft pick and forward Vincent Dunn from the Senators, as well as forward Tobias Lindberg from Vegas.

They are riding high after smashing Porto 5-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie last week. We want to keep Sadio here - he still has a contract - plus we want to strengthen as well in the future".

Gustavsson, 19, was the number 55 overall pick in the 2016 draft. The Penguins have been trying to trade Ian Cole for most of the season after he fell out of favor with the team.

Though the 30-year-old often centered the second line for Ottawa this season, he'll likely see himself slide to a bottom-six forward role with Pittsburgh, given Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin occupy the center on the top two lines.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun confirmed the team's interest in Brassard Friday morning, but noted the Penguins will need to create cap space in order to take on Brassard's $5 million salary through next season.
