Watch: Rescue Teams Find Missing Plane Wreckage in Iranian Mountains

But the altitude and weather conditions have meant that helicopters can not land to recover the bodies of the dead and they are being brought down on the backs of emergency personnel to a road at the foot of the mountain.

Iranian rescuers have located the wreckage of a passenger jet that crashed in mountainous terrain on Sunday.

State television aired footage showing the plane crash site against the side of a snow-covered mountain near Yasuj, some 780 kilometers (485 miles) south of Tehran, Iran's capital from which the Aseman Airlines flight took off on Sunday.

After two days of heavy snow and fog, the weather finally cleared on Tuesday morning, giving helicopter teams better visibility.

Iran's search and rescue teams have begun to recover bodies of a plane crash after a snowstorm and strong winds delayed crews from landing at the Zagros mountains site.

The head of the country's emergency services said moving the bodies of those who had died would prove hard in the bad weather conditions.

All required facilities, including six aircraft, several helicopters, 40 relief aid workers of the Islamic Republic of Iran Red Crescent Society and climbers from the Ministry of Sports and Youth are engaged in rescue and relief operations, a government official said.

The first seven bodies were brought down the mountain range using special army commando vehicles on Wednesday morning, according to state TV.

Authorities hoped searchers would recover the aircraft's "black boxes" later on Tuesday.

Search and rescue teams were dispatched to the site, IRNA news agency reported.

The crash has reawakened concerns about aviation safety in Iran, which has been exacerbated by global sanctions.

In just some of the more notable recent fatal accidents involving Iranian planes, 78 people died when a Boeing 727 crashed in northwest Iran in 2011, 168 when a Caspian Airlines Tupolev went down on its way to Armenia in 2009, and 276 when an Ilyushin-76 military flight crashed in 2003.

The ATR-72 - twin-engine turboprop plane - was 24-years-old, according to the Aviation Safety Network.

There are many routes that Iran could take to ensure the safety of its people from only allowing airlines to fly their most modern planes to allowing foreign airlines with modern fleets to take over the aviation sector, but they have not.
