The U.S. holiday on the third Monday in February is Washington's Birthday.

Due to the holiday declaration, all federal, state and local government offices and courts will be closed today.

The release notes that in 1968 an attempt was also made by an IL congressman to officially change the day to "Presidents' Day, but Virginia legislators weren't too keen on it and the measure dropped". Because the holiday falls between February 15 and 21 it can never fall on the actual anniversary of Washington's birth in 1732.

According to historical data, the change of date started at the end of the 60s of last century, when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, that observes all federal holidays on a Monday, intending to move holidays to a Monday whenever possible in order to allow federal employees to have a three-day weekend. Diverse voices supported the suggestion to unite both dates as an alternative to give the same recognition to the US most famous statesmen in History, but the idea was not finally approved. Some states have Presidents' Day as a holiday; others use President's Day. He follows in the footsteps of 44 others, all the way back to George Washington, who took the first oath of office in 1789. Incidentally, the third Monday in February can never fall on the 22nd, meaning the federal holiday will never land on Washington's actual birth date. An Arkansas native, Bates was a civil rights activist who played a central role in the integration of Little Rock's Center High School in 1957. Some lawmakers have objected to this view, arguing that grouping George Washington and Abraham Lincoln together with less successful presidents minimizes their legacies.

It's been rough for George Washington's birthday, officially and unofficially. Patriotic groups and the Boy Scouts of America also held celebrations on the day, and in 1938 some 5,000 people attended mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City in honor of Washington.

Schools: Closed. Some universities, such as Cleveland State, also closed.
