This one-character text message will crash your iPhone

Apple's iOS Springboard crashes the moment an iPhone user receives a message that includes the lethal Telugu character.

Trying to open a message with this symbol in iMessage or other apps that rely on Apple's UIKit framework for text rendering, like Facebook Messenger, Twitter, and WhatsApp, will cause a crash. It gets worse from here as the bug will continue crashing the apps until you remove the character from the app which is hard if you can't open the app.

The flaw appears to occur when someone sends an Indian language character to affected iPhones, according to The Verge, which also reported on the bug.

The issue, which has become known as the Telugu bug, gives people the ability to crash a wide range of iPhone, Mac and iPad apps just by sending a single character from the third most spoken language in India. If someone sends you the symbol and iOS tries to show it in a notification, the entire system software that manages the Home will be blocked, as reported by Mobile World. The bug can also disable Messages and Safari running on macOS versions.

But Apple's now obliterated such theories with an overnight update to its app submission instructions that makes it plain the X is here to stay.

Instagram Is Testing Screenshot Alerts
It's a little less obvious than Snapchat's notification, but it still has users divided over the usefulness of the feature. Instagram in 2016 rolled out a feature that sends a notification when a screenshot is taken of a private message.

Apple promised to address the issue with an update before it rolls out a new version of its iOS this spring. After this, you should be able to get back in there and delete the spooky Telugu character.

A fix for the glitch is expected once Apple release iOS 11.3 which is expected sometime in the next few months.

If a user were to send the character in Messages, for example, it can cause the entire app to freeze on all of that users Mac and iOS devices.

This bug may not be a problem for most users at the moment but it does carry certain risks if Apple fails to patch it in a timely manner.

Responding to iMore, Apple has said that a bug fix is coming in a minor update that will be rolled out ahead of iOS 11.3.
