Mursak, a Red Wings draft pick who played for the team for parts of three seasons, scored the game-tying goal late in the third and then netted the game-winner in overtime to lift Slovenia to a surprising 3-2 win over the US on Wednesday morning.

A team who have earned a reputation for punching above their weight, Slovenia captain Jan Mursak tied the game with under two minutes to go by tapping home a rebound and scored the victor less than a minute into sudden-death overtime. Goals from Brian O'Neill and Jordan Greenway helped the Americans build a 2-0 lead.

The other Group B matchup also went the way of the underdog, as Slovakia also overcame a 2-0 deficit to knock off the Olympic Athletes of Russian Federation by the same 3-2 count.

This time, the pass made it through, and Mursak beat Zapolski on the stick side, to win the game. He scored one goal in 19 games.

With under two minutes left in the third, Slovenia pulled its goalie, Gasper Kroselj, and Mursak scored to tie the game at 2.

It was the first win for Slovenia over the United States in Olympic men's ice hockey.

In the United States, the game starts Wednesday morning at 7:10 a.m. ET and will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network.
