Harvey Weinstein, 65, was one of the most powerful and influential figures in Hollywood before being accused of sexual harassment and assault by dozens of women.

The sale of the Weinstein Company, which was supposed to be completed this weekend, was thrown in turmoil as the outgoing board of directors rejected a settlement offer by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman over civil rights violations.

The lawsuit alleges that the company broke ny law and violated the company's employees' rights by "failing to protect its employees from pervasive sexual harassment, intimidation, and discrimination", Schneiderman said in a statement.

"Every New Yorker has a right to a workplace free of sexual harassment, intimidation, and fear", said Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. And Schneiderman notes that a sale could mean a windfall for those responsible for any misconduct.

According to the suit, despite many complaints to the company's human resources department and widespread knowlege of misconduct allegations, the company failed to take "meaningful" steps to protect its employees. Allegations first surfaced in October after an investigative report by the New York Times.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for The Weinstein Company for comment.

The lawsuit, filed Sunday in New York County Supreme Court, comes amid negotiations over the sale of the company and its future leadership.

The lawsuit presents an obstacle for ex-Obama administration official Maria Contreras-Sweet's bid for the company.
