Mattis says Trump's parade request reflects 'affection' for troops

Last September, at a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump announced his idea of staging a grand parade of the armed forces in Washington on July 4. In the past, we have held military parades to celebrate major national events such as the Gulf War or the end of World War II, as achievements by the American people who fought in and supported those efforts.

The White House claimed Trump was joking. Macron's office wouldn't comment or confirm a date for the trip.

TODD HARRISON: They've said so many times how military readiness is being harmed and how they are falling behind in maintenance and training activities, and this does nothing to further the readiness of the military.

US President Donald Trump has asked the Pentagon to organise a large military parade in the nation's capital. In the U.S., anyone of any status can think and say or write what they like about the soldiers. Tammy Duckworth, who has blasted "Cadet Bone Spurs", or from military families who have had to endure longer deployments, or from patients at Veterans Affairs hospitals who still endure long lines, or from those injured in non-combat accidents.

Though he was democratically elected, President Donald Trump seems to relish every opportunity to look like an autocrat.

"A military parade? Really?"

Additionally, Russia, China, and North Korea like to parade their ICBMs around, but the United States can't really do that.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reportedly confirmed the request Tuesday, saying Trump wants the Pentagon to "explore a celebration" that will allow Americans to show appreciation for the military.

"But have a parade where we can display our finest and we can all say "thank you" and honor them would be fine".

The Post's story also noted that the parade would be expected to follow "the same route as Trump's inaugural parade", which included passage over Arlington Memorial Bridge. The president, who's entered into size contests with foreign despots before, isn't acting out of character by asking for a parade bigger than France's.

While not military parades, presidential inaugurations featured more than their share of military hardware.

"The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France", a military official told The Washington Post.

Senator John Kennedy, R-La., said the USA doesn't need to "show off" its military power. And Trump's legislative director said it was too early to even guess about potential costs, though it's assumed it would cost millions.
