U.S. strikes on Syria kill 100 regime troops

Military officials said the strike was launched after as many as 500 attackers began an assault on opposition forces accompanied by U.S. advisers in Deir el-Zour province.

No U.S. personnel were injured in the attack by the pro-regime forces, unnamed officials separately told U.S. media.

One Syrian rebel soldier was wounded but no US forces were killed or wounded, according to NPR's Tom Bowman, who is reporting from elsewhere in Syria.

Syrian government forces are active on the other side of the river around the city of Deir al-Zor. However, according to one official, it is believed that Russian contractors may have been involved in the initial assault.

The SDF is an alliance of Arab and Kurdish militias in northern and eastern Syria and with US backing are fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The focus then turns to another system expected to bring widespread moderate precipitaton to the region late in the weekend. The "Expect at least this much" map has no snowfall across southern CT and the New York City area.

A USA official told CNN that the attackers crossed the Euphrates River and were armed with artillery and other weapons.

The SDF and the coalition targeted the attacking forces with air and artillery strikes after "20 to 30 artillery and tank rounds landed within 500 metres (yards) of the SDF headquarters location", the official said.

After the attack the coalition "conducted strikes against attacking forces to repel the act of aggression".

The U.S. maintains about 2,000 troops in the country.

The official said it appeared the pro-government forces were trying to reassert government control of areas that the SDF troops had seized from the Islamic State a year ago, and possibly to capture oilfields in the area. The YPG is one of many groups that makes up the SDF. They spoke on condition of anonymity as details were still emerging on the attack. "It's not always readily apparent" what sort of forces they are maneuvering on the ground in Syria's crowded battlespace, he said.
