This is McDaniels' second head coaching position, and it's an intriguing one.

Phair spent the last three years as the defensive line coach at the University of IL, where he worked under Illini head coach Lovie Smith, a former head coach of the Chicago Bears. But nothing has suggested so far that Belichick is moving on, and so McDaniels is.

The Colts are looking to rebound from an terrible 3-13 record, as 2017 was their first losing season in six years.

The report itself comes as no real surprise, save for some last-minute drama on Sunday where PFT hinted that McDaniels might be weighing staying in New England. He'll presumably coach against Bill Belichick and what will be a new-look staff.

It's official: Josh McDaniels is the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. He's won five Super Bowls with the Patriots, with the last two being as their offensive coordinator. McDaniels went 11-17 in Denver, before he was sacked by the Broncos in 2010 after less than two seasons.

Sports Illustrated's Peter King reported that during the week before the Super Bowl, McDaniels took a wrong turn out of his hotel and ended up inside the Mall of America. At the end of the day, the Colts were the winners of the McDaniels sweepstakes. He has a good start with Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, assuming Luck is healthy.

The Patriots offense was consistently among the NFL's best during McDaniels' last tenure as the team's offensive coordinator. One would also assume McDaniels has some kind of assurances about Luck's health and his ability to play in the 2018 season.

Some believe Belichick might walk away from the Patriots, but it sure doesn't seem like McDaniels would take the job if the Pats gig was about to become vacant.
