Iranian women protest their country’s hijab law by waving their headscarves in public

However, Holly Dagres, an Iranian-American analyst, said Iranian authorities are "very much aware" that more than half of the population is against wearing the hijab.

Iran's prosecutor general, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, described the protests on Wednesday as "childish", "emotionally charged" and instigated "from outside the country".

"The movement started inside Iran".

Women across Iran have been removing their headscarves in public to protest Iran's strict Islamic dress code.

"We condemn the reported arrests of at least 29 individuals for exercising their human rights and fundamental freedoms by standing up against the compulsory hijab", State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said. "We're just giving them a platform".

"This is a campaign that's been going on for years and years".

Several images and videos of the demonstrations have gone viral on social media.

Just a few months after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, despite mass protests, a law forcing women to not only cover their heads but also wear loose clothing came into effect. The footage shows Mohaved waving her white hijab defiantly from the end of a pole, her black hair flowing uncovered.

Alinejad added that mandatory headscarf laws are also insulting to men, as they presume men are incapable of controlling their sexual urges when they see uncovered women. The law was enforced with brute force on the streets until all women felt no other alternative but to follow the dress code. In the past, women who allowed their hijab to slip could be admonished by the religious police, but these forces have been less prominent under the regime of President Hassan Rouhani.

Tasnim news agency reported on Friday that 29 women had been arrested, and quoted Tehran police as saying that the detainees were arrested for "disturbing public security".

According to the Guardian, Soheila Jolodarzadeh, a female member of the Iranian parliament said, "We imposed restrictions on women and put them under unnecessary restrains".

"The girl of Enghelab Street has been released", human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh wrote in a post on her Facebook page on January 28.
