Knicks and Joakim Noah looking to part ways

"With fellow big men Kristaps Porzingis out with left knee irritation and Kyle O'Quinn sitting with a left calf injury, Noah had been told to prepare for a rare chance at significant playing time".

According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, the reason for Noah's departure was a heated confrontation with head coach Jeff Hornacek. Sources said the Knicks have yet to broach a contract buyout with Noah, but that is an avenue the franchise could pursue should their aggressive trade searches fail.

In the midst of a season during which Noah has appeared in just seven of a possible 50 games, it appears as though the already unstable situation has taken a turn for the worst.

The officially stated reason for Noah's absence from the Knicks' last two games was "personal reasons".

The report included incidents about football players in Mark Dantonio's program and basketball players in Tom Izzo's program. Before this week, Nassar already had been sentenced to 60 years in prison for federal child pornography charges.

Hornacek initially announced Noah would miss at least two games, but that will stretch to four if he does not return to the team for Wednesday's trip to Boston. "Right now, he's not here with us so I don't really want to talk about it".

In the meantime, the Knicks are exploring their options.

The hurdle: Noah isn't keen on giving back money to the Knicks in potential buyout discussions.

Trading Noah will be no easy feat for the Knicks. He makes too much money, he can't play anymore and the Knicks would have to include too many other assets in the deal to get a team to take on the contract. After signing a massive four-year, $72 million deal with the Knicks during the summer of 2016, Noah has turned into a shell of what he used to be as a player. Noah then proceeded to yell at Hornacek, prompting him to leave the team prior to the its game against the Denver Nuggets last Thursday. Noah still believes he can provide legitimate minutes for somebody out there, though his time in NY hasn't offered much validation. His season ended previous year after just 46 games when he was shut down with a knee problem, and then he served a 20-game suspension for a drug violation that bled into this season. Noah now sits behind centers Enes Kanter, O'Quinn and Willy Hernangomez on the depth chart.
