Stars wear white roses at the Grammys in support of Time's Up

After years of (admittedly incredible) P!nk stunts on awards shows (we've put her on the side of a hotel, suspended her midair in most arenas and plopped her behind the wheel of a tractor) someone finally just let her walk up to a mic and sing a damn song.

Predictably it was a hot topic on Twitter soon after, prompting United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley to post that the segment was "trash".

Mars won Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best R&B Album for "24K Magic", plus Song of the Year, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Performance for "That's What I Like".

Beyond being a critical favorite, Lamar seemed primed to be the evening's star.

The Grammys, taking place in NY after 15 years in Los Angeles, marked the first time that hip-hop has dominated the nominations after years of uneven recognition for the genre.

"To those who would dare try and silence us, we offer you two words: Time's Up!".

"It's not just going in Hollywood", Monae announced during the show. All were on the bill for the Las Vegas show in October that was torn apart by a mass shooter.

Before the performance, Maren Morris, Eric Church and Brothers Osborne performed an emotional rendition of Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" - written after his son died - in honor of the 58 people who died at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas previous year. Before the night's telecast began, Kendrick already won his first Grammy of the night for Best Music Video with "Humble".

When Morgan quickly pointed out that at least one of the videos was unverified, Trump said , "I didn't do it, I did a retweet". He had discussed Duke in multiple interviews over the years, calling him "a bigot, a racist, a problem".

"You guys are the reason I'm in the studio pulling my hair out", Mars said to his competitors in the audience when accepting the award for album of the year. She wasn't among the night's performers, even as classic rockers Sting and U2 made multiple appearances. Singers Halsey and Dua Lipa, as well as Grammy-nominated rapper Rapsody, were some of the first to say they would wear white roses.

The only problem is, an entirely different scenario was expected by many, in what was loudly touted as a landmark year of long overdue change for the Grammys.

The Grammys were also a clear example of rock "n" roll's decline as a creative force. Although he was awarded the Industry Icon Award before the televised awards, he lost all eight Grammys for which he was nominated.

The 21-year-old from suburban Toronto told the music industry's gala: "I've been pretend-winning Grammys since I was a kid in my shower".

The Rolling Stones, once judged rock's kingpins, won the third Grammy of their career - for best traditional blues recording.

Patti LuPone performs "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" during a tribute to Leonard Bernstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber at the 60th annual Grammy Awards at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, in NY.

Chris Stapleton won three Grammys in country categories. The album also was named Best Engineered Album, which lauds the work of sound engineers.

After Childish Gambino and Cardi B performed "Finesse", comedian Trevor Noah quipped: "I love that song".
