One of two bodies is removed from the home of billionaire founder of Canadian pharmaceutical firm Apotex Inc., Barry Sherman and his wife Honey, who were found dead under circumstances that police described as "suspicious" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on December 15, 2017.

"I believe that they were targeted", homicide Detective Sergeant Susan Gomes, the lead investigator, told reporters Friday.

A real estate agent on December 15 discovered Barry and Honey Sherman dead, hanging by belts from a railing circling their indoor pool.

They were bothfully clothed and wearing coats pulled down over their shoulders.

Gomes said there were no signs of forced entry at the Shermans' home.

The family said the police assessment on Friday that it was a double homicide was "consistent with the findings of the independent autopsy and investigation". Early in the investigation, multiple Canadian media outlets reported that unnamed police sources said investigators were looking into the possibility that Honey alone was a murder victim, and that she died in different location before being hanged next to her husband.

Gomes refused to discuss any suspects, beyond saying they hadn't zeroed in on any.

"We believe now, through the six week work review, we have sufficient evidence to describe this as a double homicide investigation and that both Barry and Honey Sherman were in fact targeted", she said.

Before this morning's news conference, police returned the house to the Sherman's family.

So far, 127 witnesses have been interviewed, but the list of people that detectives still need to speak with is growing, she said.

She said the two were found near their indoor pool.

Sherman, 75, was known for litigiousness and aggressive businesses practices as he developed Apotex Inc., which has a global workforce of about 11,000.

"There was absolutely unequivocally no way that he would hurt his wife, and hurt his grandkids, his family and his reputation", Sherman said. "The thought once came to mind, why didn't they just hire someone to knock me off?"

On Thursday, the federal lobbying watchdog ended its investigation into a complaint over fundraising efforts by the Shermans for Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party.

Barry Sherman founded Apotex, which sells generic drugs, in 1974, revolutionizing the drug industry in Canada.

Apotex said Friday that Jack Kay, who previously served as CEO for the privately-held company, will once again step into the chief executive role while also maintaining his current position as vice-chairman.
