Whoever wins will be a first-time Grand Slam champion. But Wozniacki stepped things up again impressively in the tie-break and this time did not blink.

Every game counted in the match.

"Yeah, at that point, you're thinking so is it really worth it to keep going".

Though Halep was also up by a break and serving at 4-3 in the third set of Saturday's loss to Wozniacki, she doesn't blame herself for faltering this time.

She then began grabbing at her left thigh after points, but somehow found the energy to break Wozniacki with a swashbuckling forehand down the line.

The stats of the match paint a far different picture from the outcome. The Dane would save two break points and reeled off three consective games to claim her most memorable title to date. During her previous reign as world No 1 Wozniacki was repeatedly asked: "When are you going to win a Grand Slam?"

Wozniacki's painful wait is over after tennis's perennial grand slam bridesmaid finally reigned with a compelling triumph on Saturday night. To be here today is a dream come true, I never cry but today is an emotional moment.

"After the first set, I just was out".

Pliskova rallies to reach Open quarter-finals
The victor of this match would next meet either Simona Halep , the #1 seed, or Karolina Pliskova , seeded #6, in the semifinals. Kerber lost that attacking drive during her crisis of confidence previous year , but Halep never got the chance to test her.

"The body was not ready because I had so many long matches", she said.

It was a hard fought match, both physically and mentally.

"Every time I was like: "Oh, I can't do this any more, I'm exhausted.' We were playing all these insane long rallies".

Unfortunately, she hasn't yet elaborated on which casino game specifically she has taken to, but perhaps with her practice at tossing the ball for the serve, maybe dice game craps was the first choice?

Simona Halep (right) congratulates Caroline Wozniacki after Wozniacki won their women's singles final. I know today is a tough day and I'm sorry I had to win.

It's taken Wozniacki 11 years, 43 majors, 256 tournaments, 772 matches and untold hours of toil and tears to shed her tag as tennis's most accomplished talent without a grand slam win.

"I had match points against Li Na". "I was thinking: "'OK, I'm looking over there, she looks a little exhausted, she must be feeling the exact same way or maybe more exhausted than me". "I was a nervous wreck this morning but you managed to calm me down". This time, the Dane controlled her nerves. She also has failed to make the breakthrough in a Grand Slam final, and so the stake couldn't be higher.

"Both had to show those qualities on their progress through the draw, with Halep becoming the first player in the Open era to reach a slam final having saved match points in multiple matches, while Wozniacki recovered from 1-5 15-40 against Jana Fett in round two".
