Taxpayers Likely to Foot Billion-Dollar Bill After SpaceX Crash

This morning's static fire test is a vital stepping stone to its upcoming maiden launch, and according to CEO Elon Musk, it went off without a hitch. This test took place at Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39-A, which SpaceX leases from NASA.

For the Falcon Heavy's first payload, Musk picked one of his used Tesla Roadsters to shoot into space, not the more typical dummy satellite often carried on test flights.

Musk has also warned that the rocket could fail and explode. Preceded by a series of dry fit checks, wet propellant loading tests, and many other bug-fixing operations at Pad 39A, today's inaugural Falcon Heavy ignition has been years in the making.

Other possible targets for Falcon Heavy include Saturn's moons Titan and Enceladus and the ice giants Neptune and Uranus. "I hope it makes it far enough away from the pad that it does not cause pad damage". He said on Instagram that it would be launched into a "billion year elliptic Mars orbit". "You could see not just governments having space programs, but private entities doing more in space, and maybe universities", he says.

The vehicle is also a payload that Musk can afford to lose: Last July, he said there's a significant chance that the maiden launch could go awry.

The Heavy is like a Falcon 9 with two more 9-engine boosters strapped on. The engines created a plume of exhaust, outputting 5.1 million pounds of thrust - that's about 1.7 million pounds from each of the rocket's three Falcon 9 cores.

If successful, "it continues SpaceX's very impressive run of achieving launch milestones that have been viewed as very hard", said Carissa Christensen, chief executive of Bryce Space and Technology, a consulting firm that follows the space industry. His entrepreneurial spirit has extended beyond automotive pursuits into areas as freaky as The Boring Company - a business he intends to use to spearhead a network of high-speed underground tunnels to trim his LA commute - and as lofty as SpaceX, an effort Musk hopes will eventually put earthlings on Mars.

In 2011, Musk said he expected that the Heavy would have its first flight in 2014.

"Will have double thrust of next largest rocket".
