"Believe me, if you ever do 300 shows, you're not in ill health". "I can honestly say that the deepest longings of my heart are satisfied", John said in response to a Scottish cardinal's remarks about homosexuality.

Previous year I picked up an infection and I was "very ill and it knocked me sideways ... but I still did 96 shows", he said. I want to spend more time with them.

Having played 3,500 concerts in more than 80 countries he has explained what his gigs aim to do: "I want them to leave with the feeling that they've been close to me, that they've had fun, maybe they've cried, maybe they've definitely laughed".

The full interview will air on Thursday's GMA which starts at 7 a.m. ET. American Express cardholders have access to a pre-sale that starts February 8. "I'm not going to be touring and travelling the world".

To do it properly, Elton will embark on a three-year, 300-date tour all around the world.

The 70-year-old singer said prior to his announcement, "I've finally decided where my future lies... the road awaits, a journey begins" and at a press conference streamed online, he announced that he would retire from touring after nearly half a century.

Tickets for the September 21 and 22 shows in D.C. go on sale to the general public on Friday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m.

He will kick off a mammoth tour of more than 300 dates, labelled Elton John's Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, in the USA on September 8th as he covers five continents over three years.

"My priorities have changed", he said, mentioning his young children.

"I'm not a person who cherishes Grammys and things like that", says Elton, a man set to be honoured at this weekend's ceremony.

John was left in intensive care earlier in 2017 after being struck down with a "potentially deadly" bacterial infection while touring South America, but despite the major health scare, the star was in Australia in September 2017 for his Once in a Lifetime national tour taking in stadiums, regional cities and wineries.

The Hall of Fame singer announced his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

On Tuesday, a pop-up event at King's Cross station also saw a self-playing piano with an augmented reality Elton sitting at it, performing "Your Song". He holds the record for the biggest-selling single of all time, "Candle in the Wind 1997", which sold in excess of 33 million copies.
