My 2 Cents: FBI Says Texts Between Agent, Lawyer Are Missing

Leading Republicans Demand Second Special Counsel to Investigate FBI Handling of Clinton E-mail Scandal

In their statement, Congressmen Schiff, Cummings, and Nadler dismissed allegations that the FBI was biased in its investigation of alleged ties between the president and Russia-asserting the bureau's actions helped President Trump while hurting Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

That search, conducted by the Justice Department's inspector general, led to the removal of counter-intelligence agent Peter Strzok, whose text exchanges with colleague Lisa Page included disparaging references to President Trump.

On Monday, in an interview with Fox News Channel, Republican South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy said that he had seen a text message - the Federal Bureau of Investigation had released a tranche of the texts to Congress over the weekend - between Page and Strzok on the day after the November 2016 election that said, "Perhaps this is the first meeting of the secret society".

But more importantly, the story is being used by Trump and his supporters to discredit the FBI and Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

The period in question - December 14, 2016 to May 17, 2017 - includes several key moments in the FBI's investigation into alleged Trump campaign-Russia collusion.

Prior to the discovery of missing texts, Trump has attacked Strzok and Page in a Wall Street Journal interview and accused them of treason for criticizing him.

The texts between Strzok and Page, would have covered a period during the Trump transition, running up to the time that Robert Mueller's Special Counsel investigation began. Those text messages also make mention of the "secret society", according to those who have knowledge of their content. It was one of two significant developments late Tuesday involving the texts, as Sen.

The changes he has made at the C.I.A. have resulted in substantive achievements, though few could be discussed publicly, Mr.

"Strzok says, quote, 'You and I both know the odds are nothing, '" Mr. Johnson said.

The lost messages, the chairmen said, represent a "critical gap encompassing the FBI's Russian Federation investigation".

Strzok reportedly changed former FBI Director James Comey's speech - in which he said he didn't recommend charges against Clinton - to say Clinton engaged in "extremely careless" behavior rather than "grossly negligent" behavior.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Monday evening that a review is already underway into what happened, and whether the text messages can be recovered.

Speaking Tuesday on Fox New Channel's "Special Report", Johnson, the chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said he has an informant to back those claims up.

Johnson said that the text referred to the Mueller investigation, which had kicked off two days earlier. Other messages also disparaged other political figures, including Democrats.

"No, we have to dig into it", Johnson said.
