The bombing raids targeted the Syrian-Kurdish YPG militia, the Turkish official said, adding that a Turkey-backed rebel group in Syria, the Free Syrian Army, was also providing assistance to the Turkish military's operation in Afrin.

"We call on the opposing sides to exercise mutual restraint", it said.

Following the airstrike, the authorities of the Afrin canton told Sputnik that at least 10 Afrin residents had been injured in the attack.

The YPG is the driving force behind a coalition of north Syrian forces allied with the U.S.to battle the Islamic State group. "The first USA military instructors arrived to train Kurdish units in Syria in 2015 since Washington believed Syrian Kurds to be the most reliable ally in the fight against Daesh and protecting American interests in the region".

Thousands rallied against the attacks in the border town of Amuda in northwest Syria.

Iran, a close ally of Assad, also condemned the Turkish assault and called on Turkey to end it. It's determined to prevent the establishment of a Kurdish state across the border in Syria and has used military force in the past against Kurds and ISIS in the northern part of the neighboring country. Some were stationed in Azaz, on the eastern edge of Afrin and others in Atmeh to the south.
