Second Brexit vote would not be undemocratic says Taoiseach

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar

TaoiseachIreland's Varadkar: "The EU is at a decisive point" has told MEPs in Strasbourg plenary of the European Parliament that the bloc is at a decisive point in its future but ready with a renewed appetite to face the challenges of the future, during the premiere of debates between EU heads of state and government ant the MEPs.

"This is particularly important for peripheral and less developed countries whose domestic markets are small and need inward investment", he said.

Seb Dance, a Labour member of the European Parliament from London and staunch Brexit opponent, told the chamber: "There are people up and down the breadth of the United Kingdom who are fighting Brexit".

Noting that the success of the Good Friday Agreement can largely be traced to Ireland's membership of the European Union, he said the Irish people are "profoundly grateful for the unswerving support of this Parliament".

"We cannot tolerate a situation where large companies can avoid paying any taxes anywhere", he said.

That is as true for American tech companies as it is true for European vehicle manufacturers and for global aerospace and defence companies.

However, a source told People that Griffin and Jenner are still very much together and are not calling it quits just yet. Nine seconds later, Griffin and Ariza received double technicals after exchanging words, and both were ejected.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has rejected claims he is failing to show leadership by refusing to explain his view on the abortion referendum, insisting "having listened, I will lead", writes Fiachra Ó Cionnaith in Strasbourg.

The agreement said that, if Britain can not strike the kind of free trade deal it wishes, Northern Ireland would remain aligned with the rules of the EU single market and customs union, both of which the British government is committed to leaving. "But it's not up to us to say if the United Kingdom wants to change its mind". "Europe should not give advantages to our competitors by acting unilaterally", Varadkar said.

"As the negotiations move forward, we will continue to rely on your support and solidarity as we work to ensure that what has been promised in theory is delivered in practice".

Varadkar meanwhile warned Britain against "backsliding" on commitments that it made in a provisional deal in December to prevent the return of a hard border between British-ruled Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland. There can be no backsliding.

The taoiseach said it was important that the deal reached in December is fully reflected in the withdrawal agreement that is now being formalised in a legal text.

He said he was pleased that Ireland had signed up to the European Union defence initiative Pesco, which saw member states coming together to deal with threats in an inclusive way. "And if they want to, they should be able to", he said.
