"We will do it as a team, as we always have", the state's new Democrat leader told the crowd gathered for a pre-inaugural concert and rally at Middlesex County College.

"In the wage issue, our history becomes a chain around our ankles in order to move forward", said Senator Nia Gill, who sponsored a bill in 2016 that was the basis for the Murphy's executive order, but the bill was vetoed by Gov. Chris Christie. "They have rejected the politics of division, of us versus them, and asked us to focus on we - all nine million who call this great state home".

Doug Steinhardt, chairman of the state Republican Party, said that because of Democratic control in Trenton, "Our ability to check Phil Murphy's radically liberal agenda from inside the system is on life support".

"A stronger and fairer New Jersey ensures the wealthiest among us pay their fair share in taxes so working and middle-class families can keep more of their hard earned money", Murphy said.

Although New Jersey's unemployment rate has fallen by half, it remains above the national average, and Christie's public transit and road projects almost caused the state to go bankrupt.

"We will be bold, but we will be responsible and realistic". "We've got to get transit right".

Murphy will attend an inaugural ball under a tent at MetLife Stadium.

Murphy thanked him for over two decades of public service to the state.

The measure modifies state law to make the use of bump stocks or trigger cranks a second-degree criminal offense in New Jersey, punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $150,000.

Murphy said the state will resist every attempt to define who is, and who is not, a real American, to delegitimize LGBTQ people, or divide people based on religion.

Hinting at Trump's reported vulgar comments last week about immigration, Murphy called the country a "beacon of light" for immigrants including those from Haiti and Africa.
