Call Me By Your Name is up for Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. Dubbed the big surprises of the ceremony, each film has been nominated for eight awards.

"We're so delighted to have been recognised by BAFTA for our debut film", said William Oldroyd (Director), Alice Birch (Writer) and Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly (Producer). But two other films widely seen as strong Oscar contenders - Greta Gerwig's coming-of-age dramedy "Lady Bird", which notched a best picture victory at the Globes in the comedy or musical category, and Steven Spielberg's Pentagon Papers drama "The Post - failed to make BAFTA's cut".

"It's a really broad mix of established and emerging talent", said BAFTA CEO Amanda Berry, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after the nominations announcement.

In the acting categories, Call Me By Your Name's Armie Hammer and The Shape of Water's Richard Jenkins will be disappointed not to secure nominations.

Stephen Fry stepped down as host this year after being in the position for 12 years.
