New Yorkers Concerned over Rising Gas Prices

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice market was $2.42 on Monday, the same as last week and 3 cents higher than a year ago, according to a report from AAA. Gas prices will edge upward as we approach spring, with gas prices rising throughout the summer into September, when prices will plateau.

Prices at the pump remain elevated due to strong oil prices. It is not clear whether or not these price hikes have anything to do with the increase to the liquid fuel tax. The lowest was in Tucson, Arizona, at $2.10 a gallon. West Texas Intermediate crude settled at a four-year high above $62 a barrel last week as global supply levels tightened. However, historical data shows that in early January demand typical drops and stays below the 9 million mark for the first few months of the year. Then reduced winter demand pushes them lower for the next month or two.

Two gas stations have raised the price of gas again this time by 15 cents.

"I must caution motorists, however, that any downturn would likely be short-lived as gas prices typically begin moving higher after the sweetness of Valentine's Day has worn off as refiners begin maintenance and the long road to summer gasoline begins", DeHaan said. "Of course, this forecast could change dramatically if there are unexpected shifts in fuel supply and/or the stock market".
