Lawmakers Plan to Release Russian-Bought Facebook Ads

Facebook to tighten regulations around political advertising

The Russia-funded political ads that ran on Facebook during the 2016 election will be shown to the public, members of the House Intelligence Committee said on Wednesday. The source revealed that Google uncovered less than $100,000 in ad spending potentially linked to Russian operatives.

As more facts continue to unfold regarding how external forces influenced last year's United States elections, Google has reportedly uncovered how Russia-linked accounts bought election ads on its network.

According to sources at Google, the ads on its various platforms, which include Gmail, YouTube and its Double Click ad network, were not purchased by the same Russian entity that bought the ads on Facebook.

Facebook placed an ad in The New York Times and The Washington Post last week that tried to assure Americans - and advertisers - that it takes its inadvertent role in election interference seriously.

In a statement, a Microsoft spokesman told Gizmodo it had received reports indicating possible involvement and would take appropriate action if it turns out Russians did purchase ads on Bing, though they did not confirm whether it had found anything.

Amit Shah's son slaps Rs 100 crore defamation suit on a website
He said the got company got Rs 25 crore loan from the Kalupur Commercial Cooperative Bank. We know who CBI, ED will investigate and who ED and CBI will not investigate.

The reason that its disconcerting is around this time past year in 2016 Microsoft were actually informed by Google that a hacking group linked to the Russian government and U.S. political hacks were exploiting a Windows 10 security flaw. However, Google's investigation has not found any evidence that the Russian ads used these categories or geographic parameters to target specific groups, the person said.

Under fire for its response to Russian activity on its site before the presidential vote, Facebook last month agreed to hand over detailed information on thousands of Russian-backed ads to congressional investigators and said it would take steps to increase political transparency.

Recently, Facebook has done some changes in its advertising programs, adding strict rules in choosing ads destination and other information, especially related to politics and religion. But, a Columbia social media researcher, reported soon after that free Facebook content affiliated with just six of those 470 pages and accounts likely reached the news feeds of users hundreds of millions of times.

Google officials have been invited to testify publicly before both the House and Senate intelligence committees about Russian attempts to use their platforms to influence the election. Google and Twitter reportedly did not collaborate on the effort, which is supposedly still in its early stages. Google is continuing to examine its own records and also is sharing data with Facebook.
