"The Turkish business is more and more interested in Serbia". Erdogan called the indictment "scandalous" and said his security detail was protecting him against Kurdish militants protesting outside his ambassador's residence. "We can all see how our emotional connection has had a positive effect on our bilateral ties".

Pointing to the annual trade volume of some $800 million and $150 million investments, Vucetic said the two countries have the potential to strengthen cooperation.

Relations between Serbia and Turkey have improved in recent years after decades of mistrust between the two nations.

The president of Turkey said his country considers the issue of Crimea to be very important and sensitive.

"This is not 1389, but 2017", Vucic said, referring to the year when the Ottoman occupation of Serbia started.

Vucic conceded in his address that he will "not be greeted half as (warmly) as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan".

President Erdogan Tuesday sought to personally blame U.S. Ambassador John Bass for the tensions.

"Recent events have forced the Turkish government to reassess the commitment of the government of the United States to the security of the Turkish mission facilities and personnel", a statement posted on the Twitter account of the Turkish embassy in Washington DC said, closely mimicking the earlier U.S. notification.

But a later version said: "This measure will apply to sticker visas as well as e-Visas and border visas", leaving open the question of whether USA travellers who already have visas would be allowed to enter Turkey.
