NVIDIA unveils chips for fully autonomous vehicles

Graphics-chip maker Nvidia (NVDA) on Tuesday unveiled a new artificial intelligence computer for fully autonomous vehicles, and announced German logistics giant Deutsche Post DHL Group is deploying a test fleet of self-driving delivery trucks next year using Nvidia technology.

To be classified as Level 5 under the definition provided by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), a vehicle must rely exclusively on a suite of powerful sensors and cameras to collect and send real-time data to its built-in computer system, enabling the vehicle to navigate completely sans any input from a human driver. It'll be able to drive around and wait on the other side of a block of flats so a driver can simply keep walking forward and through a building without having to return back to the vehicle. The new chip is aimed at "Level 5" autonomous driving, the highest level of autonomy. The headline announcement is NVIDIA's Drive PX Pegasus chip, built to enable "level 5" automation. The trunks of their current self-driving cars resemble small data centres stuffed with racks of personal computers.

"Creating a fully self-driving auto is one of society's most important endeavors - and one of the most challenging to deliver", says Jensen Huang, Nvidia founder and CEO.

"Driverless cars will enable new ride- and car-sharing services", Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said in a statement. The Drive PX Pegasus packs in four AI processors in total, yet only takes up a space the size of a licence plate. "The future of society will be reshaped", he said.

I'm not usually one to keep track of missed calls by officials, but there was a bunch in this game - and at critical times. Off the cuff, NU defensive coordinator Bob Diaco compared the experience to an airplane breaking apart in mid-air.

Pegasus is slated for a mid-2018 release as well, so it'll be a while before we begin seeing it pop up in level 5 prototypes. It allows DHL to widen its bottleneck at that "last mile" stage by putting more vehicles on the road without debilitating cost nor by putting strain on its existing drivers.

Pegasus will be retailed to the hundreds of automakers and tech companies that are now developing autonomous vehicles starting the second half of 2018, according to the company. Expected to be available in the second half of next year, Pegasus has already attracted commitments from leading autonomous vehicle startups, including Zoox, NuTonomy, and Optimus Ride. Under Huang, Nvidia's products harness the ability of graphics chips to perform many simple computing tasks at the same time more rapidly than traditional CPUs to run AI apps.

NVIDIA Corporation shares rose $3.86 (+2.08%) in premarket trading Tuesday.
