Nokia to Lay Off 310 Jobs, Halt VR Program

Nokia will stop building OZO VR cameras

Now, Nokia Technologies is pivoting from VR to digital health.

Nokia announced today that it would cease development of the Ozo virtual reality camera, which in turn, means 310 people are officially out of a job.

Nokia also wants to "optimise" investment in virtual reality (VR), however, not necessarily by creating VR products itself. Altogether the company plans to shrink its workforce by some 310, with redundancies in the United States and UK as well.

Nokia tried to put a positive spin on the news by announcing it will put more resources into growing its digital health business. Shaped like a bloated tadpole, it packed eight cameras and a corresponding eight microphones, for capturing all-round video and audio.

Since, the VR market failed to grow at a pace that Nokia expected it to, along with rivals making cheaper alternatives, Nokia's decision appears sensible. The figure represents around a third of the Nokia Technologies workforce. Some of those who lose jobs may find roles at Varjo, a company set up by former Microsoft and Nokia employees and who are now working on developing high-density VR displays.

Vegas shooter Paddock scouted Fenway Park
ABC News reports that there is no indication that Paddock traveled to Boston despite internet search for hotels near Fenway Park. But William Evans said Thursday he could not confirm the report and had not been briefed on the matter.

In July 2015, Nokia Technologies introduced a VR camera called OZO, designed for professional content creators and developed in Tampere, Finland.

Nevertheless, the layoffs will mainly happen in the US, UK and Finland and account for around 35 percent of the 1,090 employees in Nokia Technologies.

Nokia's had a very frantic last few years, being taken over then sold by Microsoft and with the brand effectively being killed in between that time.

The news comes less than a month after Nokia said it planned to cut nearly 600 jobs in France.
